Cajonero is the name given in my natal country Peru to someone that plays the cajón (box drum); baterista to someone that plays the bateria (drumset). The word cajonista could be thought as a portmanteau that combines the words cajonero and baterista and describes a especific kind of percussionist, someone that like me, centers his practice on these two instruments.

The cajón (box drum), is the main percussion instrument in creole and afro-Peruvian music and the batería (drumset) the central one in jazz. This is why, in my case, I also like to think of this word as a sort of "cultural portmanteau " that describes my musical practice which is rooted in both, the music of the coast of Peru (creole and afro-Peruvian) and the music that inspired me to come to the US called jazz
.
